The Lockheed C-130 Hercules is a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft built by Lockheed. Capable of using unprepared runways for takeoffs and landings, the C-130 was originally designed as a troop, medical evacuation, and cargo transport aircraft. The versatile airframe has found uses in a variety of other roles, including as a gunship, for airborne assault, search and rescue, scientific research support, weather reconnaissance, aerial refuelling, maritime patrol and aerial fire fighting. It is the main tactical air lifter for many military forces worldwide. Over 40 models and variants of the Hercules serve with more than 50 nations.
First 7 C-130B delivered were by the U.S. to Pakistan Air force in early 1960s, a further 4 C-130B and 5 C-130E variants were delivered later from Iran, 2 civilian versions (L-100-20) were transferred from Pakistan Air International (PIA) and 2 more ex-USAF C-130B models also received . All surviving B and E model aircraft were modified with addition of Allison T56-A-15 turboprops and extended fatigue lives by Lockheed-Georgia Co in 1987. At least 7 C-130s have been lost seen before 1988 and 1 was lost in 1988.
Sale of 6 ex-Australian C-130E with wing / engines / avionics upgrades, plus 1 aircraft for spare parts, was concluded with U.S. in September 2004. First aircraft was delivered in 2005. The aircraft is crewed by 5: two pilots, navigator, flight engineer and loadmaster. It is has Capacity to lift: 92 passengers or 64 airborne troops or 74 litter patients with 2 medical personnel or 6 pallets.
During the 1965 war, modifications to enable rear ramp opening at speeds above 150 knots enabled C-130s to be used successfully for night-time bombing of moderately defended targets.
